50-shmifty and still plucking..

Well howdy, fans! It has been a while since my last blog. Why? Life, that’s why. But I’m still here. I’m still plucking- and I’ll be turning 50 soon. There are big changes out there just waiting to be discovered.

This has been a year of questioning- everything. Like- why does 3 glasses of red affect me waaaay more than it used to? Why can’t I still play music like I did when I was 18? What is going on with these wrinkles? Is a 40 minute commute to my job really worth it? Do my dogs only love me because I give them treats and car rides? Did anyone else gain a zillion pounds during the Covid summer and have to ..uh..update..their wardrobe? Is there more to life out there than work, home, teach, sleep??

No, I haven’t purchased a Bentley or traded in my significant other for a younger model who still has hair. Nor have I started using Botox or collagen- but believe me, I’ve given it serious thought. I maaaay have purchased a new (ok gently used) harp. I did finish another half marathon and recently booked a Margarita Madness virtual 5K with some friends. I mean, what good is a run without a celebration over margaritas to follow? I nourished my geekier side with podcasts like ‘Reading Dune’ (yes- Frank Herbert’s Dune) and more recently – ‘The 50 Experience’.

In the music world, Covid continues to keep some students taking lessons via Skype, FaceTime, and Zoom. It has been challenging but good. One or two gigs have presented themselves for the summer, and a few weddings have popped back up on the horizon. One bridezilla has decided that she is going to plan all of my prelude music. Prelude music, people. That’s when folks are talking and I can play whatever I want. What gives? This bride got on YouTube and found harpists playing all kinds of crazy tunes. Her latest challenge via text, “Hey- can you please play Africa, by Toto?”. Hmmmm- I’m no Amy Turk, but I’ll give it the college try. This could get ugly- we’re talking u-g-l-y, but keeping an open mindset is key to getting through a lot of things.

Anyhoo- I just wanted to check in with all of my fellow wine drinking, dog loving, dancing, Nutella binging, music fans out there. How have you been? I guess my point today is, we can still learn, do, and try new things during midlife, right?

50-shmifty. Imma go have a beer.
